Shepherdstown chef Mary Ellen Diaz, head chef of restaurant Alma Bea in Shepherdstown, is a finalist for the 2026 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Southeast.

The restaurant’s Facebook page describes it as “A taste of community right here in Shepherdstown based on the flavors and heritage of Appalachia.”

“Woohoo! We’re honored to have been selected as a 2026 James Beard Foundation Best Chef Award nominee!” read a statement on the page posted Thursday morning. “Thank you! We couldn’t have done this without your fabulous support. And a big thanks to all those who have already reached out with kind words!”

The James Beard Foundation recognizes culinary excellence across 12 regions and achievements ranging from outstanding bakery to humanitarianism.

The Southeast category includes Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Winners will be revealed at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on Monday, June 15 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

West Virginia chefs have consistently been named as regional semifinalists for the award since 2022, and Chef Paul Smith of Charleston became the award’s first winner from West Virginia in 2024.
