Eight historic sites across West Virginia have been added to the National Register of Historic Places, including a hospital that once served Black coal miners and their families.

The newly listed sites include the Citizens National Bank of Belington in Barbour County; Mail Pouch barns in Randolph, Jackson, and Mason counties; and Old Hill Cemetery in Lewis County, home to a Yellow Poplar tree estimated to be more than 200 years old.

Also recognized are the George McComas House in Cabell County, the Capon Bridge in Hampshire County, and the Henrietta Dismukes Hospital Nurses’ Home in McDowell County — one of the few remaining structures linked to a hospital that cared for African American coal miners.

The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s official list of sites deemed worthy of preservation for their historical or archaeological significance. The West Virginia Department of Tourism said the additions reflect the state’s diverse architectural and cultural history.

With these additions, West Virginia now has 142 listings on the National Register.

More information about the listings is available on the National Park Service website.
