Charleston recorded nearly three dozen overdoses in less than 24 hours.

From Wednesday night to Thursday night, Charleston saw 35 overdoses, according to Mayor Amy Goodwin.

The mayor said on Friday there was good news to share.

“We know of no fatalities, and that’s monumental,” she said.

West Virginia recorded 770 overdose deaths statewide in the 12 months ending in April, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s a 39% decline from April 2024.

Charleston Police Department Deputy Chief Jason Webb said an arrest has been made.

“After an intense investigation,” he said, “detectives were able to locate the suspect involved in the sale of these narcotics and make an arrest.”

Webb said Anton Michael Michael Jeffries, 31, of Akron, Ohio, was arrested and charged with intent to deliver fentanyl. He is in the custody of the South Central Regional Jail.
