West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.4% for the month of November 2025. That is three tenths higher than November 2024. The national rate rose even higher to 4.6%.
October 2025 unemployment rate and related Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) are unavailable. The federal government shutdown prevented collection of Current Population Survey data required to produce these estimates. October nonfarm payroll estimates were unaffected.
The September unemployment rate, the last figures published by the state, was 4%.
The total number of employed West Virginians declined by 2,100 people over the year and the number of unemployed state residents increased by 2,400.
The bulk of the job losses for the year came in four broad categories including government, leisure and hospitality, trade, transportation and utilities and manufacturing. Those four sectors accounted for 6,400 jobs.
Construction and private education and health services offset some of those losses.
The state’s labor force participation rate was unchanged at less than 55%, well below the national average of 62%.
