Local governments, state or local government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, for-profit organizations or firms, and educational institutions can now apply for 2026 Historic Preservation Survey and Planning grants.

These grants are approved through the state Historic Preservation Office of the West Virginia Department of Tourism. Funding comes through the National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund.

Eligible projects include architectural and archaeological surveys, preparation of National Register of Historic Places nominations, heritage education programs relating to preservation activities (i.e., hands-on window or masonry workshops), pre-development activities, and development of comprehensive planning documents.

The deadline for submission of applications is 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2025.

A complete program description and access to the GoApply online grant application portal are available at: https://wvculture.org/shpo-grants/. Applicants can contact Randy Hill at Randall.Hill@wv.gov for more information.

Those who are interested in applying for a grant are encouraged to attend a virtual pre-application meeting at 2 p.m. on Nov. 19, 2025. Register here.

Funding of projects is based on how well the grant application addresses the established priorities stated in the Criteria for Evaluation. The criteria are included in the grant application documents. All grant monies must be administered in accordance with federal and state requirements.

The announcement of grantees is planned for April 2026, contingent upon receipt of a funding allocation by the National Park Service. Funded projects must be completed by Dec. 31, 2026.
