According to one pastor, the town of Oceana did not qualify for a disaster declaration because too few people – wary of volunteers and the application process – did not declare the damage to their homes.

Southern Highlands Community Mental Health clinics in Wyoming and McDowell counties serve between 65 and 80 people per month dispensing suboxone, vivitrol, sublocate and brixol. Before the deadly February 2025 flood, an estimated 10 people at the clinic in Welch, McDowell County, screened positive for substance use at check-ins. Afterward, that number shot up to 20.

Coal Miner Dies In Wyoming County; 6th Fatality In State This Year

Robert White, 63, a foreman with more than 40 years of mining experience, died Thursday at the Lower War Eagle mine in Wyoming County, according to Gov. Patrick Morrisey. There have been eight coal mine fatalities nationwide this year, according to MSHA. Six took place in West Virginia. Three of those deaths have occurred in the past six weeks.
