The Division of Natural Resources says West Virginia hunters killed 9,038 turkeys this spring. That’s down slightly from the same period last year.
Preston County led the state with 333 turkeys killed, followed by Mason County with 313 and Jackson County with 264.
DNR game biologist Keith Krantz says this season marked the first time that hunters could check in an animal through the telephone, Internet or a licensed agent.
The northern part of the state led the six DNR districts with 1,835 birds checked.
