A bat found in Kanawha County has tested positive for rabies.
“If you think about how many bats we have out there, the number of bats at any given time that are infected is really, really small,” Ethan Barton, a wildlife disease specialist with the state Department of Natural Resources, said. “Oftentimes the bats that raise the most alarm are bats exhibiting abnormal behaviors. So, say one that’s unable to fly, it’s been found on the ground, it’s acting abnormally.”
The West Virginia Department of Health reports there has never been a case of human rabies in this state. But, if left untreated, rabies is almost always fatal – so outdoor pets should be up to date on their vaccines.
Rabid bats are unusual – but their teeth are so small that a bite could go unnoticed, according to Barton.
“So that’s one of the reasons why if people find a bat that’s indoors, that may raise red flags that make it important to talk to a healthcare provider,” he said.
Health officials say to never approach an animal that appears to be sick or injured. Call animal control, and if you’re bitten or scratched, go the emergency room for treatment.
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention lists the following recommendations for the public:
- Keep your distance from wildlife. Never approach animals that appear to be injured, sick, or dead, especially if you see animals during the day who are usually active at night (e.g., bats, raccoons, etc.). Contact your area’s animal control service for assistance when needed.
- If you have pets, keep them up to date on rabies vaccines and away from wildlife when possible.
- If you or your pets have been in contact with any wildlife or sick-acting animals, particularly if you’ve been bitten or scratched, do the following:
- Wash any wounds immediately with water and soap (or water alone) for 15 minutes.
- Talk with a clinician or public health professional about your risk and if you might need rabies-related care.
- Tell your doctor about the type of animal you encountered and if you noted any signs that the animal was not acting normally.
