Fifty-four low-security inmates at the Ohio County Correctional Center are being moved to other facilities so the jail in Wheeling can close.
Corrections and Rehabilitation Commissioner David Kelly said Friday in a press release that the change allows the Division of Corrections to make better use of their capacity and resources while still providing the services required.
“We can streamline our operations without eliminating jobs or compromising the care and services provided to those in our custody,” Kelly said.
A spokesman said the decision to close was ” driven strictly by operational efficiency and the strategic consolidation of state correctional resources.”
Inmates will be moved to other facilities that are currently operating below capacity, and the move is not expected to eliminate any jobs.
According to the release, staff members will transition directly to other positions within the division, and medical care and routine programming for inmates will continue without interruption.
The change is effective immediately and is expected to take about 30 days to complete.
