Fourteen communities across West Virginia, from Beckley to Buckhannon and Morgantown to Martinsburg, will take part in the annual National Night Out activities on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

National Night Out is an annual event designed to promote police/community partnerships and camaraderie. It began as a local effort in Philadelphia in 1970 and now takes place in every state as well as U.S. territories and military bases around the world.

This year the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia will join the National Night Out festivities at Charleston’s Orchard Manor.

“National Night Out is a great way to connect with the communities we serve,” said Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston in a press release. “We make our streets safer when we build trust, strengthen relationships, and foster cooperation.”
