West Virginia has a new acting secretary of the Department of Human Services (DoHS).
Gov. Patrick Morrisey has appointed the department’s deputy secretary, Christina Mullins, to serve as acting secretary. She has served as deputy secretary since 2022.
“She understands the mission of the Department of Human Services and has spent years working to improve programs that support West Virginia families. I’m confident she will provide steady leadership as we continue important work across the department,” Morrisey said.
The former secretary, Alex Mayer, resigned his position, effective Sunday.
He arrived in West Virginia a little over a year ago from South Dakota and orchestrated, among other efforts, a statewide listening tour to identify both successes and challenges in the state’s troubled child welfare system.
The governor thanked Mayer for his service to the state.
“He has worked tirelessly on behalf of West Virginians, and I wish him the very best as he pursues an opportunity in the private sector,” Morrisey said in a statement.
DoHS administers a number of programs designed to serve children, families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, including Medicaid and public assistance programs.
