The West Virginia Distinguished Service Medal was posthumously awarded to Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom of the West Virginia Army National Guard, honoring her service and ultimate sacrifice.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey presented the medal to her parents, Evalea and Gary Beckstrom, during a ceremony on Saturday, March 14.

Beckstrom served with the 863rd Military Police Company and was assigned to the Safe & Beautiful Task Force in Washington, D.C., when she was fatally wounded during an attack last November.

“Sarah carried out her duties with the utmost in professionalism, courage and dedication, and let us never forget, in November of last year, Sarah gave all of us the ultimate sacrifice,” Morrisey said.

“No words can make atone for that sacrifice, and no medal can replace the presence of a daughter, a friend and a fellow soldier, but it is important that we pause today as a state and as a people, to recognize what Sarah gave us and what she stood for,” he said.

Created by the West Virginia Legislature in 1939, the West Virginia Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to members of the West Virginia National Guard who demonstrate conspicuous or distinguished service in the line of duty.
