Political leaders from both parties in West Virginia have been quick to respond to news of the U.S. led attack on Iran over the weekend.
Rep. Carol Miller said Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was “a depraved individual” who had recently ramped up threats against the United States.
State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Pushkin said the Constitution does not grant any President unchecked authority to wage war. He called on Congress to exercise oversight.
Republican Party Chair Del. Josh Holstein, R-Boone, said that would only become a concern if the U.S. involvement was drawn out.
“The War Powers Act gives the President broad authority, and this has been used under multiple administrations of both parties over the years,” Holstein said. “I do think that the President acted well within his legal rights to do so.”
Sen. Jim Justice thanked President Trump for his strong, decisive leadership.
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said Trump had given the Iranian regime “countless opportunities to stand down, stop killing their people, and abandon their nuclear ambitions.”
