Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who was critically injured in an ambush in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 26, continues to improve in the hospital.

Before beginning his press conference Thursday, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that, according to Wolfe’s mother Melody, the injured National Guardsman is now smiling, able to sit up in a chair and move more of his right side.

It’s been reported that Wolfe’s communications are improving, although not verbally. Morrisey noted this is an important sign for his progress.

I know that Andy’s parents are optimistic, but we want to note that there’s an intense rehabilitation period ahead, so know that as time goes on, we’ll continue to update people as information comes available,” Morrisey said.

Another National Guardsman, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, was with Wolfe the day of the attack and was also critically injured. She later died from her injuries the following day, on Thanksgiving. She was laid to rest Tuesday in a private ceremony at the National Cemetery in Grafton, West Virginia.

Both West Virginia National Guardsmen were deployed to the nation’s capitol in August.
