Community College Receives Federal, State Grants For Workforce Development 

BridgeValley Community and Technical College in Charleston has been awarded a $257,408 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).  

The funding will support the West Virginia Advanced Highway Training Program, a new initiative designed to address ongoing labor shortages in highway construction and infrastructure.  

Participants will get hands-on training in areas such as highway construction and bridge inspection to earn industry-recognized credentials, preparing them for high-demand careers across West Virginia’s transportation sector.  

“This investment allows us to expand access to careers that are critical to West Virginia’s infrastructure and economic growth,” Kristi Sarrett, dean of Workforce Development and Technical Education, said. “We are equipping students with the skills employers need while creating clear pathways into stable, well-paying jobs.” 

BridgeValley is one of only 16 institutions nationwide selected to receive funding through this competitive FHWA program, which supports efforts to recruit, train and place individuals into highway construction careers. 

BridgeValley was also awarded a $20,000 WV Advance grant to enhance hands-on training in its Welding Technology program.  

The funding will support the addition of new equipment and learning resources for students enrolled in the college’s oxy-fuel welding course, a foundational component of welding and metal fabrication careers. 

“Workforce demand for skilled welders remains strong across West Virginia,” Sarret said. “This grant allows us to strengthen our training environment and better prepare students for high-quality, in-demand careers.” 

The upgraded training environment is also expected to support stronger connections with regional employers, helping ensure graduates are prepared to meet workforce needs in manufacturing, construction and related industries.
