On the morning of Oct. 7th Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center at WVU installed “October 7: A Day to Bring Light in Woodburn Circle.” The 10-sign outdoor display on WVU’s downtown Morgantown campus remembers the Israelis, Americans, Thai nationals and others who died or were affected by the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attacks in Israel.

Jim Ebel, an organizer and alum of Rohr Chabad said the goal of the display was to be a source of light and strength when remembering hard times.

“Our real goal was to demonstrate that hate would not have the last word on Oct. 7. That there was a way to bring a message to mourn the loss of people, but bring light to the world as well,” Ebel said.

The installment comes a week after pro-Palestinian group West Virginia Coalition for Justice in Palestine displayed red flags across WVU’s campus commemorating the death toll of the conflicts in Gaza and Iran. The group put on a similar display in 2024.

According to Human Rights Watch 1,195 people died in the attack and 851 of them were civilians. 251 people were taken as hostages.

The official Palestinian death toll from the nearly three-year Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 74,000, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The Israel Defense Force believes that the Hamas-run health ministry’s death toll from the war in the Gaza Strip has been largely accurate.

However external observers have continually estimated a much higher death toll in publications like the medical journal The Lancet.
