Tickets are now available for Theatre West Virginia’s 2026 Summer Season in Beckley. Originally named the West Virginia Historical Drama Association, the troupe was founded in 1955 and produced its first show in 1961 at the Cliffside Amphitheatre at Grandview State Park, now part of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

The outdoor drama troupe will open its season on June 19 with the 65th anniversary of “Honey in the Rock,” which Theatre West Virginia describes as “America’s oldest Civil War drama.” The play by West Virginia native Kermit Hunter depicts the birth of West Virginia during the war.

“Honey in the Rock” will then run in repertory with “Shrek the Musical” through July 18. Theatre West Virginia regularly changes productions from year to year and has historically produced a “Hatfields and McCoys” musical written by Billy Edd Wheeler.

“We’re excited to bring this 65th anniversary season to southern West Virginia residents and tourists – it’s a perfect balance of the history Theatre West Virginia was founded to share, and the popular entertainment our local audiences love,” kb saine, artistic director said. “We’re continuing to increase our production values and involvement with the community. This season is going to be a special one.”

Along with its summer series, Theatre West Virginia also presents other shows throughout the year including an annual production of “A Christmas Carol,” and maintains a year-round academy training program for youth.
