Poets, sharpen your pencils and get ready to write. The state is sponsoring a poetry contest for the America250 celebration on the Fourth of July.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Wednesday the America250 Poetry Contest, inviting West Virginians of all ages to submit original poems.
According to the contest announcement, it provides an opportunity for residents to reflect on the people, places and defining moments that have shaped both the Mountain State and the nation.
Submissions will be accepted through June 24.
One winning entry will be selected, and the author will be recognized as part of West Virginia’s America250 Celebration at the State Capitol in July.
Poems must not exceed 40 lines but there is no minimum length. They can be written in any style including free verse, rhymed or traditional forms.
Content must remain nonpartisan and politically neutral, focusing on unity, history, culture, and civic pride.

His latest undertaking is called the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Initiative. The project identified and documented more than two dozen previously unknown underground railroad sites throughout eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio and West Virginia.
