One of America’s pioneering filmmakers had nothing to do with Hollywood but nevertheless left his mark on the emerging industry. Oscar Micheaux was a homesteader, who then turned his attention to making movies in the early 1900s. He was a Black man who made movies for Black audiences at a time when they weren’t allowed into mainstream, white-only theaters. And for several pivotal years in the 1920s, he operated out of Roanoke, Virginia.

President Donald Trump nominated two West Virginians to serve as United States Attorneys in the state. The White House released the list of nominations sent to the Senate on Tuesday.
Moore Capito, former House Judiciary Chairman and candidate for governor, has been nominated to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of West Virginia.

Moore Capito, a Yale-educated attorney and former Delegate, who ran for governor in 2024, has been tapped to serve in West Virginia’s Southern District. The seat was previously held by Will Thompson, who was nominated by President Joe Biden.
Center: West Virginia First Foundation Chair Matthew Harvey has been nominated to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia.
Matt Harvey has been serving as the prosecuting attorney of Jefferson County since 2016 and has been nominated to the Northern District of West Virginia. He said he’s been going through the vetting process since January.
“The types of cases that the federal government has the resources to prosecute is a huge reason why I wanted to make that transition, to make big impacts on a bigger scale,” Harvey said in an interview with West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
U. S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Moore Capito’s mother, called both men stellar candidates in a post on X and said she looks forward to supporting their quick confirmations.
