Justice William “Bill” Wooton experienced what was described as a medical incident Wednesday morning during oral arguments at the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.
“Arguments were stopped and emergency personnel were called in to treat the situation,” Jared Hunt, the court’s communications director, said in a statement. “Justice Wooton was conscious, alert and conversing with first responders as they treated him.”
Hunt said Wooton has been transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Oral arguments for the rest of the day have been cancelled and hearings will be rescheduled.
Wednesday marked the start of the court’s September argument calendar, with more than 40 cases scheduled to be argued in front of the high court through Sept. 23.
Wooton is a native of Raleigh County and was elected in 2020 to a 12-year-term that began on Jan. 1, 2021. He has a law degree from West Virginia University College of Law and served in the West Virginia Legislature, in both the House of Delegates and the Senate, for 26 years.
He and his wife have three grown sons and five grandchildren.
