JB McCuskey, along with 44 other attorneys general, signed onto a letter sent to companies including Apple, Google, Meta and Open AI that addresses alarming reports of AI chatbots engaging in sexually inappropriate conversations with kids.
The letter specifically points to recent revelations from internal documents at Meta that show the company approved AI assistants to “flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children” as young as eight.
In a press release, McCuskey said the race for dominance in the artificial intelligence (AI) world will not be allowed to take precedence over the safety of children.
“We are urging these companies to take steps to correct these serious issues and ensure that moving forward, safety protocols are in place to protect our kids,” McCuskey wrote.
The letter demands that company policies for AI products incorporate guardrails against sexualizing children.
AI assistants and tools have exploded in popularity in recent years, with some studies finding that as many as one in three Americans now use AI tools regularly. But as adoption has grown, so have reports of mental health issues among users including psychosis. In extreme cases, AI chat models have been accused in court of driving users to suicide.
