One hundred nine miners and operators at the Panther Creek Mine in Eskdale, in southeastern Kanawha County, are slated to lose their jobs just before Christmas. That’s according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed Thursday.
Eskdale is an unincorporated town with fewer than 350 residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
WARN notices are required by federal law 60 days before a layoff or plant shutdown is scheduled. The mine operation plans to lay off the miners beginning Dec. 5. Warn notices are tracked by Workforce West Virginia.
The shutdown will affect the Samples Complex including the surface mine and the Toms Fork preparation plant and load out.
According to the WARN notice, these are “non-represented” miners. The cuts are anticipated to be permanent, and these miners will not have “bumping rights.” That would allow them to bump others with less seniority out of a job.
This is the 10th WARN notice this year so far. According to the WARN tracker, more than 1,300 workers have lost their jobs and approximately 900 of them are in the coal industry across six WARN notices.
