Shepherd University was recognized this week for its more than 100 years of service to education in West Virginia.

West Virginia Secretary of State Kris Warner visited Shepherd University Wednesday to award the school with a Centurion Award.

“We see Shepherd University as being in the business of educating our students,” Warner said. “And preparing them for lifelong success, whether that’s culturally or economic opportunity.”

The Centurion Award is presented through the Secretary of State’s office and the West Virginia Centurion Chamber of Commerce program. According to a press release, the award highlights achievements in academic excellence, workforce preparation and community engagement.

Warner said Shepherd plays a vital role in shaping West Virginia’s economic and educational landscape.

“A lot can change over 100 years. That’s why our office continues to identify businesses and institutions that meet all the criteria for the Centurion Award,” he said. “So far, we’ve found about 220 organizations that have been serving their communities for a century or more across the Mountain State.”

Founded in 1871, Shepherd has focused its educational efforts on STEM and liberal arts for more than 150 years.

“Secretary Warner’s presentation underscores the vital role Shepherd plays as a hub for education, innovation and economic development in the Eastern Panhandle,” Shepherd President Mary Hendrix wrote in the release. “Our university continues to serve as a connector — bringing together students, alumni and local businesses to strengthen the region and advance opportunities for all.”
