Thanksgiving is more than seven months away, but starting this weekend, turkeys across the state have reason to hide.
That’s because West Virginia’s annual Spring Gobbler Season opens on Monday and runs through May 24. There’s also a special Youth Spring Gobbler Season on Friday and Saturday for hunters under 18.
“I challenge all turkey hunters out there to take a new hunter out. You’re not just giving up one of your days in the woods, you are preserving that rich heritage of hunting that we are so proud of in West Virginia,” said Brett McMillion, director of the state’s Division of Natural Resources (DNR).
Last year’s harvest netted just over 10,500 birds, he added.
“I’ve talked with our wildlife biologist and our chief of wildlife and we’re predicting this year to be a little better,” McMillion said. “Our biologists also believe that the flock is healthy overall, and the increased numbers of two-year-old birds will be pretty prevalent this year.”
One reason for the high expectations is the forecast. DNR said it looks great for at least the first week of the season – which typically accounts for at least half of the total harvest.
The DNR website lists the gear hunters will need, including a reliable shotgun, camouflage clothing, turkey calls and decoys, binoculars, sturdy boots, a hunting vest or backpack, a hunting knife, range finder and a good pair of gloves.
The DNR has issued several reminders ahead of the season:
