Here’s something for college basketball fans to celebrate: For just the eleventh time in more than 70 years, the Big 12 West Virginia Mountaineers and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) will face off — this time in the Mountain State.

The non-conference matchup — part of the 2025 Holiday Hoopfest —  will take place at the Charleston Coliseum Dec. 6. So far, WVU leads the series 7 to 3.

“It’s been a long time since the men’s basketball team played in Charleston,” said WVU Head Coach Ross Hodge. “When we were presented with this two-game, neutral-site series against Wake Forest, it certainly made sense for us.”

“As we continue to build our non-conference schedule, this is a quality opponent from the ACC,” Hodge added. “I know our fans will be excited and be there to support us.”

With two loyal fan bases, the teams are likely to bring a sizable crowd to Charleston, according to Convention and Visitors Bureau President Tim Brady.

“Hosting this game not only gives us the opportunity to bring the WVU men’s basketball team to Charleston to play in front of the loyal fan base that lives here, but, more importantly for us, it’s a tourism draw bringing WVU and Wake Forest fans to town during a very vibrant period,” Brady said.

Presale begins Sept. 2, with tickets available to the public Sept. 5.

The two teams will face off again at a date still to be determined during the 2026-27 season in Greensboro, North Carolina.
