This week, we’re revisiting our episode “What Is Appalachia?” from December 2021. Appalachia connects mountainous parts of the South, the Midwest, the Rust Belt and even the Northeast. That leaves so much room for geographic and cultural variation, as well as many different views on what Appalachia really is.

The fall broadcast season of Mountain Stage continues this week when guest host David Mayfield welcomes Vanessa Collier, Margaret Glaspy, Matt Andersen, Amythyst Kiah, and Ron Sowell.
Our Song of the Week comes from Margaret Glaspy, a California-born, New York-based indie folk rocker and singer-songwriter. During her third appearance on Mountain Stage, she performed a handful of original songs and covers from her latest release, The Golden Heart Protector. Our Song of the Week is a stripped-down version of her original song “Get Back,” which appears on her 2023 album, Echo the Diamond.
