This week’s premiere broadcast of Mountain Stage features Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, Vienna Teng, Joe Crookston, and William Matheny with host Kathy Mattea.

Thank you to the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts and Media for welcoming us back to be a part of the University Arts Series at the Canady Creative Arts Center in Morgantown, WV.

On this episode, Grammy-winning producer and bassist Don Was is joined by his new band, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. This powerhouse group features renowned Detroit-area musicians Dave McMurray, Luis Resto, Vincent Chandler, John Douglas, Jeff Canady, Mahindi Masai, Wayne Gerard, and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an.

Our Song of the Week is the entire performance of the medley commonly referred to as “Help/Slip/Frank” by the Grateful Dead. This is comprised of the three Grateful Dead tunes, “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower.” Recorded just days after the world learned of the passing of Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir, Was and his band’s performance carries extra sentimental weight.

Tune in to an affiliate station near you starting Friday, March 20 to hear their full set, plus more live performances by indie pop and chamber-folk artist Vienna Teng, folk singer-songwriter Joe Crookston, and West Virginia-based singer-songwriter and “literary rock’n’roller” William Matheny.
