The Greenbank Observatory is offering a limited chance to go behind the scenes to check out its Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). SETI tours are offered to small groups – ages 12 and up – several times a month through October. We caught up with the Observatory’s news manager to find out more about the tours – and what exactly scientists there are looking for.

Our spring broadcast season begins this week with the premiere of our 42nd anniversary show, recorded in December 2025. On this episode, host Kathy Mattea welcomes The Bacon Brothers, Rose Cousins, Shawn Camp, Mark Erelli, and Tessa McCoy & The State Birds.
This special anniversary episode also marks a monumental moment: the retirement of our long-time house band vocalist, Julie Adams. For more than four decades, Julie has been a staple on Mountain Stage, singing iconic harmonies with hundreds of musicians. She can be heard on nearly 1,070 episodes of the show, accompanying our guest artists, host Kathy Mattea, and founder and artistic director Larry Groce.
Our Song of the Week is Julie’s performance of “Talking at the Same Time” by Tom Waits.
Tune in to one of these NPR stations starting Friday, March 13 to hear this song, plus more from folk-rock duo composed of actor Kevin Bacon and composer Michael Bacon The Bacon Brothers, Canadian singer-songwriter Rose Cousins, GRAMMY-winning songwriter and bluegrass troubadour Shawn Camp, critically acclaimed American singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Erelli, and West Virginia folk group Tessa McCoy & The State Birds.
