A West Virginia town, widely considered to be one of the most haunted towns in America, is getting a jump on spooky season with dozens of events leading up to BooFest on Halloween night.
“We have quite a lot of interesting ghost stories around Shepherdstown and a couple of tour groups that are really good,” Experience Shepherdstown president Shannon Thomas said. “People in Shepherdstown love their ghost stories and love Halloween.”
There are activities throughout the month, including mystery tours, spooky stories, the popular Tomes of Terror and the Howl-o-ween Pet Pawrade. Thomas said the events are an important part of the small-town charm that locals were determined to keep.
The Howl-o-ween Pet Pawrade was a popular event that was discontinued around the time of Covid. It’s making a comeback on Oct. 22.

“Some folks started Boo Fest some years ago. COVID kind of killed it for a little bit and we’re bringing it back,” Thomas said. “Especially nowadays, it just seems like there’s a lot of divisiveness out there and there’s people worried about one thing or another. When you really come down to it, community is so incredibly important and having places that we can gather and just remember that we’re all members of the same community.”
The biggest night of course is Halloween which – new this year -- features theCharles Washington Symphony Orchestra with its haunted symphony.

For LGBTQ youth in Appalachia, estrangement from their families of origin can be a common and heartbreaking experience. So, some LGBTQ people rely on “chosen family." In Roanoke, Virginia, the culture of ballroom offers the safety and stability of family, along with traditions that are handed down — traditions like vogueing. Mason Adams reported this Folkways story, in collaboration with Brad Kutner and Kelley Libby.
