Federal officials are adding a Clarksburg site to the list of the most serious spots identified for environmental cleanup.
On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency announced the addition of the North 25th Street Glass and Zinc site to the Superfund National Priorities List.
The EPA says the site currently stores recycled paper for a pulp facility and hosts a car repair service. A zinc slag pile there contains lead, is accessible to the public, and is eroding into the West Fork River.
From 1899 through 1989, the facility manufactured glass. From 1911 to 1924, it processed zinc ore, creating a hazardous waste legacy.
The soils onsite and the groundwater and sediments of the West Fork contain lead, arsenic and zinc.
The site is eligible for cleanup with federal Superfund money.
