Residents of West Virginia ages 60 and up can now receive free vouchers for locally-grown produce as part of an annual summertime program.
Operated by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides participating senior citizens a booklet of vouchers totaling $30 for the purchase of produce at pre-selected farmers markets and roadside stands.
Residents can apply to participate in the program through their county senior services department or aging center. Participants must meet eligibility criteria based on their income level.
SFMNP vouchers are now accessible statewide, and can be redeemed at participating locations from June 2 to Oct. 31. Participants must receive vouchers in their home county, but can use the vouchers at participating locations anywhere in the state.
In a Thursday press release, Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt said the program meets two “vital needs” in the state simultaneously: boosting nutrition for senior citizens and creating new sales opportunities for farmers and vendors.
“We encourage all eligible seniors to take advantage of this opportunity to access fresh, West Virginia-grown products,” Leonhardt said.
