On this West Virginia Morning, not much has been known about Appalachia’s contributions to the Underground Railroad – until now.
Before the Civil War, slaves escaped to the free north through the underground railroad. Cicero Fain is a historian at Marshall University documenting the region’s Black history through his Appalachian Freedom Heritage Initiative. Fain spoke with Inside Appalachia’s Mason Adams about documenting dozens of previously unknown underground railroad sites throughout our region.
Also, Secretary of State Kris Warner is maintaining his position to not share voter rolls with the federal government, despite new threats of legal action. In Parkersburg, the remnants of a warehouse fire are finally out and cleanup and investigations begin.
And it promises to be a stormy weekend and as Maria Young reports, a flood watch is in effect for much of the state, through Sunday morning.
