Our premiere fall broadcast season of Mountain Stage begins this week when host Kathy Mattea welcomes John R. Miller, Michaela Anne, Bill Kirchen, Amy Speace, and Floyd Mercantile.
On this episode, you’ll hear a live performance by Floyd Mercantile, an acoustic trio featuring Peter Mulvey, Jenna Nicholls, and guitarist Ross Bellenoit. This musical project came to fruition in 2025, resulting in a beautiful collection of new songs and classic American folk tunes. Our Song of the Week is their performance of “Some People,” which was released in April 2026 on Righteous Babe Records.
In a blurb from YouTube, Mulvey said, “This was the first song I ever wrote in the spirit of a Jazz standard, having become utterly charmed by how the songs of that era applied such a light touch to such heavy topics. I folded religion, paganism, hypocrisy, politics, Hildegard of Bingen, and nice sandwiches into a tidy little tongue-in-cheek song, stole a bridge melody from Paul Simon, and without meaning to, launched a fan favorite in my sets for years. Jenna Nicholls saw what had been hiding in plain sight: it’s a no-brainer to make it a call-and-response duet!”
Also joining us this week are West Virginia-born singer-songwriter John R. Miller, Americana artist Michaela Anne, “Titan of the Telecaster” Bill Kirchen, and folksinger and songwriter Amy Speace.
