More than $60,000 is headed to the West Virginia Department of Education to cover a portion of the fees charged to low-income students taking advanced placement tests.

The funding is part of more than $28 million that the U.S. Department of Education awarded to 40 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

The grant payments are based on the anticipated number of test-takers, among other factors.

Federal education officials say the payments should be sufficient to cover all but $18 of the cost of each advanced placement exam taken by a low-income student.
