State health officials are partnering with Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College on a pilot program to move recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits toward self-sufficiency.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced the program on Thursday at the college in Mount Gay.
The DHHR says 21 recipients will begin classes at Southern in the fall and work toward a degree or certificate program.
The students will receive academic assistance from Southern, such as boot camps for math and English.
The DHHR says it has helped the students seek financial aid and counselors’ advice regarding the program they will choose.
If the program succeeds, the DHHR says it will be implemented in other areas of the state.
