More than 38,000 West Virginians are living with Alzheimer’s disease right now, and that number is only expected to grow. But caregivers and those with the diagnosis often have a lot of questions.

On Oct. 8, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is hosting a free Alzheimer’s & Caregiving Educational Conference for West Virginia residents. The program lasts from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Charleston Marriott Town Center and will provide information on the disease and the signs of it.

“Knowledge is a useful and powerful tool that can help make any situation easier to navigate, especially something as challenging as caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Connecting families with useful, practical information and support that can help them now and be better prepared for the future is what this conference is all about.”

Sessions during the AFA conference will include:

Aging and the Brain: Navigating Alzheimer’s with a Multidisciplinary Approach – Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, and age and lifestyle choices play a role in your risk for developing it.

Safeguarding What Matters: Alzheimer’s Planning & Medicaid Access – Alzheimer’s often leads to long-term care, which can be quite expensive.

Metro AAA: Services Meeting the Struggles of Alzheimer’s – Every caregiver needs a support system, and local area agencies on aging are tremendous resources for help.
