Since the May 12 primary election, 17,872 voters have registered in West Virginia – many of them young people who’ve just become eligible, according to Secretary of State Kris Warner.

The state now has 1,210,297 registered voters.

Warner said there’s been a clear shift in party registration.

“What’s happening in West Virginia, the trend continues of the Democrat Party losing voter registration. The Republican Party and unaffiliated areas are continuing to gain voters, whether those be newly registered voters or whether it’s folks that are leaving the Democrat Party and switching their party registration,” Warner said. “If you rank those three, Republican, Democrat, and no party affiliation, the Republican Party is #1, unaffiliated is #2, and the Democratic Party has fallen to #3.”

The figures show Republicans have increased their rolls by 6,114 since May. Democrats have dropped 137, and the number of voters who selected No Party affiliation is up 5,146 since May.

Voter registration totals by political affiliation in West Virginia are as follows:

  • Republican: 527,532
  • Democratic: 326,697
  • Mountain: 2,810
  • Libertarian: 10,876
  • Constitution: 289
  • No Party Affiliation: 307,373
  • Other: 34,720
