The Senate Finance Committee has finalized its budget recommendations and referred both the budget and a related state income tax cut to the full Senate for consideration.
The committee took up Senate Bill 250, the budget bill, Monday afternoon – along with Senate Bill 392, which proposes a cut in the state income tax rate.
Using last year’s final state budget and the one submitted this year by Gov. Patrick Morrisey as guides, lawmakers have to decide how best to fund things like the Medicaid program, which faces possible federal cuts; a 3% pay raise for teachers and state employees; and the Hope Scholarship, which provides funds for parents who educate their children in a private school, charter school or home school.
Morrisey submitted a budget that reflects a 5% state income tax cut, but he’s challenged lawmakers to cut another 5% in personal taxes, which the Senate version does reflect.
The bill is expected to come before the full Senate later this week.
