Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe’s mother Melody made a statement over the weekend about the progress her son is making.

Wolfe is recovering in the hospital from injuries he received from the Nov. 26 ambush shooting in Washington, D.C.

Melody joined Maj. Gen. James Seward, the adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard to make a video statement.

“He’s coming along, well, surpassing expectations,” she said. “Just all the prayers that you’ve given, they’re working, and we’re seeing that miracle happen in that hospital bed right now.”

She continued to say that “Andy is very active, more alert. Sedation has come off. They’re scaling back on his pain medication. He itched his forehead this morning. He itched it last night. This morning, I went to boop his little nose. He looked at me, gave me the side eye, turned away from me. You know, he did turn his head to look at me again when I said his name.”

Wolfe and Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom were both shot in the attack. Beckstrom died from her injuries the next day. Her funeral arrangements have not been announced and will remain private to only invited guests.

Seward asked for continued prayers for both families.

“Andy is really making remarkable improvements thanks to your prayers and the amazing medical care that he’s getting,” he said. “We want to ask people to continue to pray, yes for Andy, but also for the Beckstrom family as we continue to mourn with them. And mom also wants you to pray for our troops.”

Donations for the Beckstrom family should be sent to:
