The country’s 250th birthday is coming up in a little more than a month, and the West Virginia Capitol ground will be the focus of free events like a 240-foot-tall Ferris wheel and a laser light display.
But this is a statewide celebration, and Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced Thursday the state’s America250 Bell-Ringing Initiative.
Churches, schools, veterans’ organizations, civic groups and local communities are invited to ring their bells at noon on July 4.
“It’s a powerful synchronized tribute to our liberties, to our communities, to the citizens of our state,” Morrisey said, “and it’s going to really show the patriotism that all West Virginians have.”
Preparations are also underway for the nightly 3D light projection show that will illuminate the State Capitol during the state’s four-day America250 Capital City Celebration this July. Specialized drones are currently mapping portions of the Capitol Complex to support development of the large-scale projection experience, which is inspired by a similar Washington Monument display in Washington, D.C.
“West Virginia’s heritage plays a meaningful role in America’s story, and this collection is a great way for us to celebrate that legacy along with America250,” Morrisey said. “We hope folks will join us for the four-day celebration at the Capitol Complex, bring their friends and families, and take home a piece of the America250 merchandise line as a lasting reminder of this historic milestone.”
Morrisey also announced a new America250 merchandise line. The commemorative collection includes clothing, coins, hats, pins, mugs, ornaments and other keepsake items created in collaboration with America250.
The merchandise will be available at West Virginia State Park gift shops and online, with additional items expected to be added to the collection in the coming weeks.
Communities interested in participating in the bell-ringing initiative are encouraged to complete the online registration form so the state can create an interactive map of ceremonies taking place across the Mountain State.
