A frigid, powerful winter storm is expected to hit much of the state this weekend. Gov. Patrick Morrisey has declared a State of Preparedness for all 55 counties, a move that allows the state’s Emergency Management Division to prepare staff and equipment.
Snowfall is expected to start Saturday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch across the state. Meteorologist Levi Cornett with the Charleston office says the Capital City can expect 6-12 inches of snow over the weekend. But other parts of the state are likely to see more than that.
“We’re telling folks to prepare for heavy snowfall,” Cornett said.
“The heaviest amounts currently look to be across northern West Virginia, the eastern panhandle, across the mountains and the Metro Valley and tri- state area, and portions of the eastern mountains, like closer to Beckley and Lewisburg,” he added.
The storm is expected to cause very slick, icy roads, hazardous traveling conditions and widespread power outages.
