One of West Virginia’s oil and gas companies is entering a new partnership with the state to plug abandoned wells.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey and the CEO of Diversified Energy announced the partnership in Bridgeport on Thursday.
The company will contribute $70 million over the next 20 years to plug 1,500 wells.
There are thousands of abandoned wells across West Virginia, and too few public resources to address them.
Morrisey said the partnership with Diversified could be a model for other states.
“This is a blueprint, not only for West Virginia, but for the nation to follow as well,” he said.
The governor said the partnership would create 50 to 100 jobs, paying $75,000 a year.
Uncapped wells pollute soil and groundwater and release methane into the atmosphere.
