An annual initiative that reduces back-to-school costs for West Virginia families returns for four days at the start of August.
The West Virginia State Sales Tax Holiday runs from Aug. 1 to Aug. 4. The holiday exempts qualifying back-to-school purchases under specific price points from state sales taxes, lowering costs for shoppers.
There is no limit on how many items within a purchase qualify for the sales tax exemption, so long as each individual item falls beneath the maximum cost to qualify. With some restrictions, the price restrictions on qualifying purchases are as follows:
- $500 for laptop and tablet computers
- $150 for sports equipment
- $125 for individual clothing items
- $50 for school supplies
- $20 for school instruction materials
Certain items sold to West Virginia shoppers by mail or internet may qualify for the sales tax exemption if bought and processed by retailers during the sales tax window.
The annual sales tax holiday is administered by the West Virginia Tax Division. For more information on the event, plus a full list of restrictions and qualifying purchases, visit the Tax Division website.
