The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the Legislature Joint Committee on Government Organization is recommending that only deteriorated signs that have lost reflectivity along four-lane highways be replaced.
The newspaper reports an Ohio-based contractor hired by the DOH was putting up new road signs next to seemingly identical signs before removing the older ones. Delegate Gary Howell criticized the project, saying it created an impression that the DOH was wasting money.
Deputy Transportation Secretary John McBrayer says the DOH is currently working to make changes to the sign management system. He says the DOH currently replaces highway signs every 20 to 25 years.
