The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded a $417,000 grant to Mountain State Educational Services Cooperative.

The grant is part of ARISE – the Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies. It will be used to help students prepare for in-demand career opportunities in West Virginia.

The project called “Empowerment Collaborative: Increasing Student Empowerment in Appalachia,” prepares middle school students in West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania to solve real world problems in their communities through simulation and engagement.

The project’s four-year plan is to expand the Empowerment Collaborative model into a total of six middle schools.

Friday’s announcement builds on $11.5 million in ARISE funding awarded to date to Connect Humanity, Education Alliance, and Virginia Tech, bringing their total investment to nearly $12 million.
