Tensions Run High as 2018 W.Va. Legislative Session Nears Final Week

On The Legislature Today, there’s only one full week left of the 2018 West Virginia Legislative session. In these final days, tensions continue to run high over the teacher work stoppage and the legislative process addressing the issues of PEIA and teacher salaries. Host Andrea Lannom is joined by fellow statehouse reporter Jake Zuckerman of the Charleston Gazette-Mail to breakdown all the action of the week and what’s to come as we near the final hours.

Breakdown of the Reporter Roundtable:

  • Governor Jim Justice traveled to Wheeling, Martinsburg, and Morgantown earlier this week. The trip was followed by a press conference at the Capitol announcing a 5 percent pay raise for teachers, state service personnel, and state police
  • Work stoppage continued throughout the week; all 55 W.Va. County School Systems; stoppage hit seventh day on Friday
  • Teachers and state workers argue the real issue is PEIA, not the pay raise
  • House Bill 4145 – on pause in the Senate after being fast-tracked through the House. This is the pay raise bill to give teachers and others the 5 percent raise
  • Status of the Budget Bill – SB 152?
  • Will the work stoppage continue next week?
  • PEIA task force?
  • Why hasn’t Governor Justice been at the Capitol?
  • Sports Wagering – SB 415 – passed the House Friday
  • Medical Marijuana Expansion – HB 4345 – passed out of the House this week
