Appalachian Power customers will see their electric power bills rise by about a dollar so the company can purchase an out-of-state wind farm.

Appalachian Power announced the purchase of the Top Hat Wind Facility in Logan County, Illinois last week. It will provide power to large industrial customers interested in having renewable generation in their energy portfolio.

The wind facility, which has a generating capacity of 204 megawatts, only recently went into service on Nov. 7.

The increase to customers will take effect on Dec. 12, increasing the bill for a West Virginia residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month by $1.08.

The company said once the new industrial customers come online, customers will begin to see a reduction in their overall bill.
