Marshall University faculty and staff will get smaller raises because of state budget cuts.

The university said in a news release that its governing board approved a resolution Wednesday, Dec. 9, scaling back raises from 3 percent to 2 percent in the fiscal year 2016 budget. The raises will take effect in January.

Mary Ellen Heuton, the university’s chief financial officer, said the administration and the board felt strongly that it needed to keep its commitment to raise salaries in the coming year.

She said the university will be able to make other adjustments to absorb the 4 percent budget cut for state agencies that Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin ordered in October.

For Marshall, that cut amounts to about $2.5 million.
