More than 40,000 outages were reported in Appalachian Power’s West Virginia territory, primarily in the southern part of the state.

By early afternoon, Mercer County had the most outages, around 25,000.

Regionwide, the company had more than 250,000 outages across southern West Virginia, southwest Virginia and east Tennessee.

Appalachian Power said in an early afternoon update that 1,000 employees and contractors were involved in power restoration work.

Additional assistance was coming from Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma and Texas, the company said.

Appalachian Power said restoration efforts in some areas could extend beyond Sunday.
