Gov. Jim Justice’s last inauguration, in 2021, held limited events amid COVID-19 restrictions. He will now head to the U.S. Senate to be sworn in, having delayed finishing his gubernatorial term until Morrisey’s inauguration.

Justice painted a positive outlook of the state’s budget after tax cuts during his tenure, while Morrisey has said he anticipates inheriting revenue challenges.

“I think the world of Patrick and Denise, and I wish them the best in every way, and I stand ready to try to help them at every minute,” Justice said in his Jan. 8 farewell address.

At a Jan. 2 press conference, Morrisey made his first round of executive and cabinet appointments and said he expected to announce more around Inauguration day.

Morrisey also said his team was proactively strengthening safety measures for the inauguration.

“We’re going to do everything possible in our power to make sure that people feel comfortable and safe on inauguration day,” Morrisey said. “So that involves a lot of discussions and communications so that the best available systems are put in place.”

The swearing-in ceremony will air at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13 on the West Virginia channel and stream on wvpublic.org.
